Bisabolol

Bisabolol or α-Bisabolol is a skin-calming, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing ingredient in cosmetic products, known for its ability to soothe sensitive and irritated skin, reduce redness and roughness, and provide antioxidant benefits to help keep skin firm. Bisabolol is a versatile ingredient found in creams, serums, cleansers, and products for both skin and hair care, including after-sun treatments and acne formulations.

  • Product Name: Bisabolol
  • INCI Name: Bisabolol
  • Synonyms: α-Bisabolol,(-)-α-Bisabolol,L-α-Bisabolol,Levomenol
  • CAS No.: 23089-26-1
  • Funtions: Anti-aging,soothing,anti-inflammatory,Antibacterial

Bisabolol, also known as known as levomenol, sweet bisabolol, is one of the sesquiterpenes in nature. It has two structures: α-body and β-body. The molecular formula is C15H26O. Bisabolol is mainly used in skin protection and skin care cosmetics. Bisabolol is suitable for use in sunscreen products, bath solution after sunbathing, baby products and after shaving care products.

Bisabolol is divided into α-bisabolol and β-bisabolol, but their uses are quite different. β-bisabolol is generally derived from corn, cotton, and camphor oil, and is mainly used as a flavoring agent in the food industry; it is α-bisabolol that is widely used by people in the cosmetics and personal care fields for anti-inflammatory and soothing purposes.

bisabolol

From the perspective of core properties, the most prominent value of Bisabolol lies in its mild anti-inflammatory and soothing activity. Bisabolol can alleviate redness, itching, and pain caused by skin irritation by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins. Bisabolol is particularly suitable for sensitive and damaged skin (such as barrier-impaired or post-cosmetic surgery skin). Additionally, Bisabolol has certain antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities, which can help inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes (improving mild acne) and remove free radicals to reduce oxidative damage from environmental factors such as UV rays and pollution. Moreover, Bisabolol has excellent skin penetration—its molecular structure can easily penetrate the stratum corneum, not only exerting its own effects but also acting as a 'penetration enhancer' to help other active ingredients (such as vitamin C and ceramides) be better absorbed by the skin.

In practical applications, Bisabolol is a 'multi-functional ingredient' across various fields: in cosmetics, it is often added to soothing face creams, repair serums, sensitive skin sunscreens, and baby moisturizers, typically at concentrations of 0.1%-1%. In the medical field, it is used in oral care products (such as soothing mouthwashes to relieve mouth ulcers) and topical formulations (such as eczema creams and burn creams) to assist in treating skin inflammation using its anti-inflammatory properties. Even in the food industry, it is used in small amounts as a natural flavoring (with a mild herbal scent) and can be legally added to candies and beverages. Overall, Bisabolol, with its characteristics of 'low allergenicity, high efficacy, and multi-scenario adaptability,' stands out as one of the representatives of natural active ingredients that combine 'effectiveness' and 'safety.'
