Hyaluronic acid is a natural humectant that binds water to itself; it is often repeated that it can hold 1,000 times its own weight in water. As we age, our body’s ability to produce it decreases, causing the skin to become dry and less elastic. Applying it topically can solve this problem as it increases the absorption of any products you apply afterwards.
You’ve probably used hyaluronic acid products without knowing it, as it’s a common ingredient in moisturizers, serums, eye creams, and masks. In the list of ingredients, it may appear as “Hyaluronic Acid Hydrolyzed”, “Sodium Hyaluronate” and “Sodium Hyaluronate” along with “Hyaluronic Acid”.
In serum form (our favorite form of application), hyaluronic acid products are usually clear and often a bit sticky. They are usually lightweight and easy to put on, which means you can easily apply a small amount to your face and absorb quickly.

This new skincare line from the workout brand for the face is beautifully packaged: it has a push-button dropper (instead of the traditional squeezing dropper) that, when you unscrew the cap, dispenses just enough product to cover you. It pops up on your face when you touch your skin and has a very fine dropper for excellent control. Along with hyaluronic acid, it also contains niacinamide (which improves transparency and texture) and polyglutamic acid, which some have called the next hero similar to hyaluronic acid. Makes skin brighter, feels strong and supple.
Hydraluron is popular because of its modest price and ease of effectiveness. It’s a thick formula so it doesn’t run between your fingers and leaves tight, dry skin feeling lighter, lifted and healthy. While the squeeze tube may not be as attractive as other packaging, we love that you can cut it open to access every piece of product.
Balance Me Serum is 99% natural and contains three different sized hyaluronic acid molecules, each capable of penetrating the skin to varying degrees for comprehensive and deep hydration. The smallest weights work to smooth out fine lines and plump with repeated use, while the heavier weights absorb surface moisture and provide temporary relief.

The bright turquoise color in the Hyaluronic Acid Ocean line of the American dermatological brand simply calms us down. It is a lightweight cooling gel cream that provides excellent hydration without leaving skin feeling heavy, tight or sticky. In addition to hyaluronic acid, it contains amino acids and B vitamins, glycolic acid to gently exfoliate and improve texture, and seaweed to increase elasticity (hence the name “sea moisture”).
We love French drugstore brand Vichy for their great formulas and surprisingly low prices. The list of ingredients is short – just 11 – and rich: in addition to skin-tightening and firming hyaluronic acid, it also contains Vichy French Volcanic Water, which contains 15 minerals that help improve skin’s barrier function. It has the texture and effects of more expensive brands, but without the hefty price tag.
Any time skin care ingredients are exposed to the air, that is, when you open a jar or bottle, they decompose or bacteria get on your fingers. Encapsulated skin care products keep ingredients as fresh, effective and hygienic as possible. Elizabeth Arden Hyaluronic Acid Capsules also contain ceramides (both present naturally in the skin but lost with age); together they absorb moisture, penetrate deep into the skin and strengthen the skin barrier to prevent moisture loss. The texture is gorgeous and silky and the capsules are biodegradable.
You can rely on an ingredient-focused brand like The Ordinary to deliver products in this category. His Hyaluronic Acid Serum combines three weights of cross-linked hyaluronic acid with vitamin B5 to help promote hydration as well. We found it a little sticky, but this can be alleviated by applying more product on top, and it’s a small price to pay for a firm moisturizing serum at such a low price.
